Bright and colourful summer wedding at the Byre at Inchyra

July 1, 2025

I love a bright colourful wedding, and Jenna and Peter’s day was so much fun with colours everywhere.

This was my second visit to the Byre at Inchyra that week, and on this wedding I was working alongside Sarah from Joy Story Photography which is always, well, a joy!

I’m a big fan of the Byre at Inchyra, I’d say that it’s one of the original Scottish barn venues. Now those types of venues are really popular and you can find them all over Scotland but, back in the day, The Byre was a bit of an outlier with its rustic barn setup.

Weddings at The Byre at Inchyra

The Byre at Inchyra is so flexible, especially if the weather is on your side as there are some great outdoor spaces. There are a few different options for wedding ceremonies and receptions, depending on the weather. It’s in an ideal location too, out in the Perthshire countryside but not too far from Edinburgh or Glasgow. It’s easy for guests to travel to but you still feel like you’re out in the middle of nowhere. The best of both worlds!

Jenna and Peter had the most beautiful weather for their July wedding, so it’s no surprise they opted for an outdoor ceremony. The Walled Garden is a really popular ceremony spot and so beautiful, especially when the flowers are in full bloom and the sun is shining.

I’ve done a lot of weddings in the Walled Garden, and it’s a beautiful sheltered spot with nature all around! The wedding I’d done earlier in the week had chosen to have an arch to get married in front of - something quite a few couples choose to do - but Jenna and Peter had decided to keep things natural.

One thing to keep in mind, if you’re having an arch and are planning on relocating it up to the main Byre after the ceremony, pick a frame that’s easily manoeuvrable. The team at The Byre are great and will lend a hand (and even have a trailer to move things about) but you don’t want to damage the arch or dislodge any flowers as it’s moved about.

Both Jenna and Peter got ready on site, so it was an easy stroll over to the Walled Garden and made for some lovely photos en route.

Jenna and her party got ready up near the main Byre. They all had lovely bright bouquets with streaming, colourful ribbons and the very first dahlias of the year from my cutting garden. I filled the bouquets with lots of warm, fun colours - pinks, oranges, peaches and yellows. Jenna wanted little pops of lilac in there so we added mint alongside cosmos, snapdragons, sweet peas, roses and nigella. All the interesting textures and bright colours! Her bouquet was finished off with brightly coloured streaming ribbons. As a little added extra, Jenna had a flower comb which sat behind her beautifully styled hair (thanks to the wonderful Leslie at Pamper and Polish).

Peter spent the morning at the Gardeners Cottage, right outside the garden. His buttonhole was made up of lots of little bright bits and pieces that also featured in Jenna’s bridal bouquet. This was a really fun way to tie in the wedding colours with his tweed outfit. I bound the buttonholes with twine which works well for a more rustic wedding feel.

Bringing the outside in - wedding flowers transform a space

The Byre, where the wedding breakfast takes place, is a restored, atmospheric barn, with so much space. It’s a blank canvas so anything goes and Jenna and Peter’s bright colours made the space look amazing. The neutral tones of the stone walls and oak beams mean that any and all colours look great so the choice is endless here.

Inside the Byre we created big hanging foliage hoops above the top table. They were full and luscious with loads of seasonal greenery and little tealight globes suspended from them. It’s quite a dark space so the twinkling tealights made a really beautiful effect and it created magical woodland meets Midsummer Night’s Dream vibes!

The guests were seated at round tables with an assortment of bud vases in the centre, all filled with colourful, seasonal flowers. July is such a great month for flowers, there’s so much going on!

Jenna loves dahlias and thankfully the very first dahlias of the season bloomed the week of her wedding. So we put lots of them all over the place. Dahlias have a fairly circular face so it was a good way to tie in with the visual pattern of the round hanging hoops and round guest tables.

With the bud vases (I went off on a dahlia tangent there!) I grouped three in the centre of the table, all different shapes and sizes. It creates a more interesting design, especially with the mix and match vases. It was such a colourful wedding, Jenna and Peter really leaned into that vibe with colourful glassware from the caterers too.

The long top table was lined with bud vases, along with a loose foliage runner, softening up the starker edge of the table. Above the guest tables we wound ivy and greenery through the venue’s candelabras, mirroring the hanging hoops and bringing the outside in.

A great feature of the Byre is the old water troughs along the edge of the dance floor. They were filled with water and candles and flower heads floated on the surface. It all added to the twinkly colourful atmosphere.

Beautiful venue touches

I always like adding extra touches around the venue. It’s another chance to bring in the wedding colours and add to vibe of the day. With more rustic venues crates are a good way to add some interest and height. We popped the bridesmaid’s flowers in vases once the ceremony and photos were done, they sat alongside some extra bud vases on crates and whisky barrels.

Alongside the main Byre is a smaller room, which makes for a great “chill out zone”. As a bit of a feature we made a backdrop of colourful hanging ribbons and some light greenery. This made for a great photo booth and was really popular with guests.

Jenna and Peter’s wedding is a great example of how bright, fun colours can look so fab within a more rustic setting. Thank you to Sarah at Joy Story for sharing these beautiful images.
